Mary Lou Brown
POMPANO BEACH, FL - Mary Lou (Petty) Brown, 96, of Pompano Beach, FL, passed away Monday, August 31, 2020, at Court at Palm Aire Skilled Nursing Center in Pompano Beach, FL, following a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease.
Born in Wellsville, Ohio, on August 7, 1924, Mary Lou was a daughter of the late William and Erla B. (Paisley) Petty. In 1946 she was married to Richard (Gus) Herbert Brown, who predeceased her in 2014 after 68 years of marriage.
Mary Lou was a 1942 graduate of Wellsville High School. After high school, she worked for the railroad and Ohio Bell. At the age of 50, Mary Lou graduated from Kettering Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Kettering, OH. She continued to work at Kettering Memorial Hospital as a licensed practical nurse. It was there where she fulfilled her dream of being a nurse. Mary Lou was a member of the Eastern Stars. She was also a talented seamstress, and later loved to crochet. She made each grandchild a blanket to bundle them in when taking them home for the very first time. Mary Lou especially enjoyed playing cards, crosswords, and solitaire.
Throughout the years, she resided in Wellsville, Ohio, Kettering, Ohio, back to Wellsville, Ohio, on to Englewood, FL, and lastly Pompano Beach, FL.
Mary Lou was a devoted wife, mother, daughter, niece, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her loving family includes her three children: Cathy (Michael) Casey, Rick Brown, and Cindy Brown; five grandchildren: Michael Casey, William Casey, Benjamin (Holley) Casey, Jenna (Derek) Longshore, and Joshua (Jenna) Murphy; and seven great-grandchildren: Arturo, Brenda, Caitlyn, Lucy, Griffin, Julia, and Jamie.
Friends may call from 10:30 am - 12:30 pm on Friday, September 4, 2020, at the Roberts Funeral Home, 631 Main Street in Wellsville. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and to adhere to social distancing guidelines, the number of people in the funeral home at one time will be limited. Also, as mandated by Governor Mike DeWine, face masks are required to be worn while in the funeral home.
A private funeral service for both Mary Lou and Gus will be held at the Roberts Funeral Home with Pastor Mark Blakeley of the Wellsville First Christian Church officiating.
Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery.
For Mary Lou, in lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in her memory to the Alzheimer's Association at ALZ.org.
For Gus, those wishing may contribute in his memory to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital at stjude.org.
