Obituary of Thomas Eugene Phillips
Thomas Eugene "Tom" Phillips
STEUBENVILLE - Thomas Eugene "Tom" Phillips, 89, of Steubenville, formerly of Wellsville, passed away Saturday, August 22, 2020, at his home surrounded by his family.
He was born October 2, 1930, in Wellsville, the son of the late Harry John and Laetta L. (Thomas) Phillips. Tom's German family roots extend along the upper Ohio River Valley, including a long-time fire chief in Wellsville at the turn of the century, and the historic western Pennsylvania villages of Harmony and Zelienople.
In addition to his parents, Tom was preceded in death in January 2003 by his wife, Doris Jean Phillips; one son, David Thomas Phillips; one sister, Evelyn Seigler; and his cousin and life-long fishing buddy, James "Jimmy" LaClair, whom he considered a brother. He was also preceded in death by his beloved dog, Patches.
Tom was employed for over thirty years as a foreman in the cold strip for the former Crucible Steel Mill in Midland before retiring in 1981. He was a Free Mason for fifty-nine years with lodges in the valley of Steubenville. He lived a life full of travel, including his private flights, family cross-country road trips, and annual fishing trips.
Survivors include one daughter, Deborah Lee Phillips; and two sons: Christopher Andrew Phillips and Todd Alan Phillips; five grandchildren: Thomas Phillips, Scott Lanway, Alexandra Clark, Harrison Phillips, and Megan Phillips; one great-grandson, Macon Clark; and his God-daughter, Amber Daniels.
Friends may call from 6:00 - 8:00 pm on Tuesday, August 25, 2020, at the Roberts Funeral Home, 631 Main Street in Wellsville. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and to adhere to social distancing guidelines, the number of people in the funeral home at one time will be limited. While the family greatly appreciates your love and support during this difficult time, they ask that you greet them with kind and loving words instead of a hug or handshake. Also, as mandated by Governor Mike DeWine, face masks are required to be worn while in the funeral home. Online condolences can be posted to the funeral home's website or Facebook page as register books will not be provided in the funeral home during this unprecedented time. Please be understanding of the precautions being taken in the interest of everyone's safety.
A private family service will be held.
Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of the flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made in Tom's name to: Shriner's Hospital for Children, Attn: Office of Development, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607 or Valley Hospice, 10686 State Route 150, Rayland, OH 43943.
