Obituary of Jean Hays

Margaret Jean Hays

SALINEVILLE - Margaret Jean Hays, 90, of Salineville, went to be with her heavenly father on Saturday, May 4, 2019, at her daughter's home in Zanesville, surrounded by her loving family.

Jean was born September 30, 1928, on the family farm in Wellsville, the daughter of the late Frank and Jeannette (Patterson) Smith.  In addition to her parents, Jean was preceded in death on February 26, 2011, by her husband of sixty-three years, Wilbur Hays, whom she married July 3, 1947.  She was also preceded in death by her sister, Mary McPherson, and two brothers: John and Hugh Smith.

Jean was a graduate of Wellsville High School.  She was a lifelong and devoted member of Bethel Presbyterian Church where she was active in the Missionary Society, CO&M class, and the Bethel Choir.  With her husband Wilbur, Jean was a farmer and business owner of Midway Auto Service where she spent many years tending to the store while Wilbur worked on cars and sold Cub Cadet tractors.  Jean was also a cosmetologist and had her own business for a number of years.  She was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates fan, and the only time her family ever saw her upset was when one of her teams was losing.  She loved to travel and made many memories visiting her beloved family around the country.

Survivors include one daughter, Patricia Strickler and her husband, Harry, of Zanesville, OH; and two sons: Stan Hays and his wife, Annette, of Mendham, NJ, and Mark Hays of Canton, OH.  Also surviving are her six adoring grandchildren: Shannon (Justin) Ross of Colorado Springs, CO, Sarah VanWye (John) Barnwell of Takoma Park, MD, Tyler VanWye of Zaneville, OH, Olivia Hays of New York, NY, Lizzy Jean Hays of Mendham, NJ, and AJ Hays of Sewickley, PA.  Jean had six great-grandchildren who were fortunate to know her: Hayley, Jaxon, Brennan and Andrew Ross, Jack Barnwell, and Sullivan VanWye.  Also surviving is one sister, Laura Randolph; one sister-in-law, Dorotha Smith; and many wonderful nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, May 10, 2019, at the Bethel Presbyterian Church, 16521 Steubenville Pike Road in Salineville, with Pastor Tanta Luckhardt-Hendricks officiating.

Burial will follow in Bethel Presbyterian Cemetery.

Friends may call from 2:00-4:00 pm and 6:00-8:00 pm on Thursday at the Roberts Funeral Home, 631 Main Street in Wellsville, as well as one hour prior to service at the church on Friday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Jean's name to: Bethel Presbyterian Church, 16521 Steubenville Pike Road, Salineville, OH 43945.
