Thomas J. “Tom” Brophey
WELLSVILLE - Thomas J. “Tom” Brophey, 81, of Wellsville, passed away Saturday, November 4, 2017, at Valley Hospice Care Center in Steubenville following a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born August 25, 1936, in Wellsville, the son of the late Joseph and Geraldine (McLaughlin) Brophey. In addition to his parents, Tom was preceded in death by his daughter, Gerri Brophey-Postich, two infant twin brothers, and his in-laws, Fred and Betty Amato.
Tom graduated from Wellsville High School in 1955. He owned and operated Tom’s Barber Shop in Toronto for sixty-one years where he was affectionately known as “Barber Tom”. Tom was an avid runner with the Pioneer Road Runners where he ran twelve marathons including the Boston Marathon. Tom ran more marathons than anyone else in the Ohio Valley. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 507 and Wellsville High School Hall of Fame Committee. Tom was also a member of the former Immaculate Conception Church in Wellsville.
Survivors include his wife of sixty years and high school sweetheart, Angela “Dolly” (Amato) Brophey, whom he married October 26, 1957; one son, Thomas F. Brophey of Wellsville; one sister, Rosemary Jumper of Lexington, SC; one brother, Kenneth Brophey and his wife, Tanny, of Orlando, FL; and his devoted sister-in-law, Irma Amato. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews; and his fur-baby poodle, Merfilu.
Honoring Tom’s wishes, the family had private visitation followed by a Catholic Funeral Liturgy at the Sacred Heart Parish with Reverend Jeeson Stephan as celebrant.
Burial was in St. Elizabeth Cemetery.
The family requests that any memorial contributions be made in Tom’s name to Sacred Heart Parish, 424 Fourth Street in Chester WV 26034, or St. Francis Parish, 412 Findley, in Toronto, Ohio 43964.
Roberts Funeral Home in Wellsville was entrusted with Tom’s arrangements.
